Myth and Memory:
Printmaking, drawing and sculpture exploring links between healing myths, art and neuroscience
Solo exhibition at the Strule Art Centre Omagh, Co.Tyrone 6th-29th January 2022
In this exhibition I have explored themes such as ancient healing myths, in Irish mythology and notably the Greek myth of Chiron that she encountered in Dr Michael Kearney’s autobiographical work ‘Mortally wounded’. The pandemic has created a shared experience of trauma and also a search for new and hopeful realities.
“Trauma" is the Greek word for ‘wound’. Although the Greeks used the term only for physical injuries, nowadays trauma is just as likely to refer to emotional wounds.” (Merriam Webster Dictionary). The reference to ‘memory’ in the title also echoes the artist’s work as an Art Psychotherapist and counsellor and her interest in contemporary advances in neuroscience and her recent training in psychotherapeutic modalities such as Somatic Experiencing and EMDR that refer to the importance of the body and the nervous system in healing. This has also led to the recognition of post-traumatic growth. The later works are inspired by the artwork of the neuroscientist Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934).
